In Washington, the Defense Secretary David Brice has a political dispute with Senator William &#39;Billy&#39; Duvall about the project of a submarine. He asks his advisor Scott Pritchard to invite the Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Farrell, who has become a national hero after rescuing a sailor during a storm, to join his team. Farrell meets Susan Atwell in a party and they have a torrid love affair. Farrell Learns that Susan is Brice&#39;s mistress but he falls in love with her. They spend a weekend together and when they return to Susan&#39;s apartment, Brice rings the bell. The upset Farrell leaves the apartment and sees Brice waiting for Susan. Brice has an argument with Susan and pushes her from the balcony. She falls on a glass table and dies. Brice panics and reports the accident to Pritchard. However, the Machiavellian chief of staff accuses the imaginary Soviet mole Yuri of murdering Susan. Farrell is assigned to lead the investigations to find the identity of Yuri, and gets in serious situation with the presence of witnesses of his weekend with Susan and the regeneration of a Polaroid photo that was found in Susan&#39;s apartment. This is an extremely under-rated film. While being a political thriller, it should really be viewedone of the great suspense/chase thrillers of the 80&#39;s. The casting of Gene Hackman adds an elevated sense of authority to the whole movie, and he puts in his usual professional effortsthe politician who knows there could be no way out. Actually, it is Costner who ends up having no way out, having been implicated in a death, and he has to work against the clock to prove what&#39;s really going on.<br/><br/>This is the first Costner film I had seen, and the crackling script is really brought to life by the director, who builds up an extreme sense of tensionthe clock ticks away. Although some people will cite the finalebeing somewhat telegraphed, it doesn&#39;t really detract from the rest of the film, which on many levels appears to be more intelligent than it actually is - a complete opposite to most movies of this genre.<br/><br/>The film will hold your attention throughout, and the Costner character actsa precursor to his later effort in the equally superb JFK.<br/><br/>8/10. When I watched this the first time, the suspensethe film speeds towards it&#39;s conclusion was absolutely mind-blowing! I thought it one of the best thrillers I&#39;d ever seen. The second time thru was not nearlygood. Since I knew what was going to happen, the intensity, suspense and fun was gone. Performances in this film are excellent from Costner, Hackman and Young. This is definitely a great film to watch once. Just don&#39;t expect that same thrill the second time. The action is tight and suspenseful, and the plot culminates in the most astounding last-minute switch of the decade. Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman shinethe main characters, and Will Patton leads a solid supporting cast.
